AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS ‘FINISHED’ UNDER DOER GOVERNMENT |
Tories demand changes to CAIS Program to help devastated farmers

Today, Minnedosa MLA Leanne Rowat and Arthur-Virden MLA Larry Maguire pressed the Agricultural Minister for changes to the Canadian Agricultural Income Stabilization (CAIS) Program to assist devastated producers in Manitoba. Manitoba producers are looking to Doer’s NDP government to lobby the federal government to make changes to the CAIS Program, so it will work for all producers in need.
“This NDP government is too busy developing catchy farming slogans to realize that our agricultural producers in Manitoba are finished,” said Rowat. “The NDP continues to rely on the CAIS Program which has failed to address the real needs of our producers.”
Rowat brought forward concerns raised by a producer from the Minnedosa Constituency, Richard Boutall.
“Mr. Boutall has said ‘I realize there is nothing that can be done for those of us that are finished in this business. However, there are things that can be done for those that have managed to survive,’” said Rowat.
“This NDP government needs to tell Mr. Boutall, and all Manitobans, why they refuse to deal with this very serious issue,” concluded Rowat.
Maguire also expressed concern over the ineffectiveness of the CAIS program.
“Agriculture in Manitoba is in a state of crisis,” said Maguire. “The NDP are sitting idle while the agricultural industry is struggling with the lasting effects of the BSE crisis, drought and flooding, low grain prices and extreme fuel costs. Producers are looking to the Premier and his NDP government for answers. Instead, they are flooded by a handful of more broken promises.”
